Dr. Amy Brunt Thompson is a neonatologist, NICU medical director, spiritual director, and seminary student preparing for bi-vocational priesthood through Iona School for Ministry. Her life bridges medicine, music, contemplative spirituality, medical ethics, and Christian ministry.

Professional background

Dr. Thompson earned:

• A Bachelor of Music Education from Baylor University.

• A master’s degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Central Arkansas.

• A Doctor of Medicine from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.

After medical school, she completed residency training in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, followed by a fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. She also completed a Medical Ethics certification through Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.

Her neonatal-care work has taken her to NICUs in Arkansas, Alabama, Texas, and Wisconsin. In 2018, she joined Baylor Scott & White Health in College Station, Texas, where she currently serves as a neonatologist and Medical Director of the NICU.

Ministry and formation

Although she sensed a call to ministry as a teenager, Amy’s path has unfolded gradually alongside her medical vocation. Her earlier ministry experience includes serving with:

• Super Summer Arkansas as a camp staff member.

• West Baptist Church in Batesville, Arkansas, as a youth and children’s intern.

• Youth and children’s ministries during her time at Baylor University.

She joined the Episcopal Church in 2015 and was confirmed at Christ Church in Little Rock, Arkansas, in May 2016. She is now a rising third-year student in the bi-vocational priest track at Iona School of Ministry.

Spiritual direction and service

Amy graduated from the FIND School of Spiritual Direction and Formation in 2022 and completed the Living School at the Center for Action and Contemplation in 2023. She is an active spiritual director and serves on the Guiding Council of Middleway Urban Monastery, a contemplative Christian spiritual center in College Station.

Her ministry also has an international medical-mission dimension. She has participated in medical mission travels to Romania and Honduras, and she worked with Project Hope—supported by the World Health Organization—to help strengthen neonatal intensive-care services in Romania.

Family

Amy  is married to Michael, who also has pursued formation through Iona School for Ministry and served at St. Francis during his second year in the bi-vocational priest track. They have a son, Caleb, who keeps her current on the latest video games.
